The group is appropriate for any LGBTQIA+ pregnant or birthing person who needs support, to vent, to process, to hear how others are coping with the transition to parenthood, and meet people who can become part of your parenting village.
Remember to pick a (relatively) quiet place with some privacy. Ear buds or headphones are strongly suggested.
The transition to parenthood can be a challenging time. Many pregnant and new parents experience a roller coaster of emotions during this adjustment, ranging from excitement, joy, & wonder, to confusion, fear, sadness, rage or disappointment. Typical postpartum adjustment can take up to two weeks after the birth, however when emotional challenges last beyond that, it can be appropriate for a different approach to support and/or treatment.
Research shows that for every 1 in 7 Mother-identifying/Birthing parents (and 1 in 10 Dads/Non-Birthing Parents), having a new baby doesn't feel the way they'd hope, and they may experience feelings of sadness, isolation, failure, anxiety, resentment, guilt, shame, anger, grief, or depression that don't go away. They may also feel a lack of attachment or connection to their baby. This is true of birth parents AND partners.
Our Parent Collective peer support group is for LGBTQIA+ pregnant and postpartum parents to have a brave space to talk about the emotional challenges of pregnancy and new parenting. It also allows participants the opportunity to share their experiences in a non-judgmental atmosphere with other parents who understand. Our Parent Collective group is not group therapy, but a support group that allows participants to share their truths, hear how others are managing new parenthood, and connect with other parents in our community. In addition, this is a great way for new parents to grow their own "village", with other parents that truly understand.
This group is facilitated by Lindsey Burns, LPC (she/her), who is a licensed therapist and member of the LGTBQIA+ community, and has facilitated pregnancy and new parent groups since 2016. Lindsey continues to marvel at the magical healing that can occur in the context of being witnessed and honored by other parents in a nonjudgmental, brave space. Lindsey identifies as Mom to two elementary-aged, neuro-divergent kiddos and wife to a wonderful, supportive and affirming man, all who teach her so much, all of the time. This group uses the trauma-responsive and inclusive group peer support model GPS.
